AVL Technician
The role
We design and install AVL systems for churches across the country. This is the job that puts them in.
You will be in the shop in Melbourne building and wiring racks, then on site pulling cable, hanging speakers, mounting displays and terminating connections until the room works. It is physical work that rewards precision. A rack you build cleanly today is a rack somebody can troubleshoot three years from now. A cable you label properly saves a volunteer twenty minutes on a Sunday morning when something goes sideways.
This is a hands-on seat with room to grow. Several people on our team started here.
What you will be doing
Shop prep and rack fabrication
Build and wire equipment racks before they ship. Test gear, load firmware, label everything, and pack the truck so nothing is missing when the crew lands.
Installation
Pull and terminate audio, video, network and DMX cable. Mount and align displays, projectors, speakers and lighting fixtures. Work safely from ladders and lifts. Build to the drawings, and say something when the field does not match them, because it often does not.
Commissioning support
Assist with system tuning, DSP presets, network configuration and signal flow verification. Help prove out every input and output before we hand a room over.
Conduct on site
You are working inside an occupied building that holds services, weddings and funerals while we are there. Keep the site clean and safe, communicate with church staff, and leave the place better than you found it.
Closeout
Label, document and photograph what you built. Work the punch list until it is empty.
Who we are looking for
Someone who takes pride in work nobody sees. Most of what you build ends up behind a rack door or above a ceiling, and the only people who will ever notice are the techs who come after you. Do it right anyway.
You should be comfortable on a lift, on a ladder, and on your feet all day. You should be willing to fly to a job, work a focused week with a small crew, and come home. And it should matter to you that the system you installed is the reason a congregation can actually hear the message.
If you have run production at a church, you already understand this work from the other side of it. That is worth a great deal to us and it shows up in how you treat the room.
What you need
- Hands-on experience in AV installation, low voltage, electrical work, or church production
- Comfortable working at height from ladders and lifts, and able to lift 50 pounds
- Proficient with hand and power tools
- Able to read a plan set and build from it
- Valid driver’s license, and able to travel domestically by air
- Willing to learn Dante, DSP platforms and network configuration if you do not know them yet
Nice to have
- Dante certification
- Aerial or scissor lift certification
- Low voltage experience
- Rigging experience
- Time spent running audio, video or lighting on a church production team
Compensation and benefits
$18 to $25 per hour, depending on experience. This is an hourly, non-exempt position, so hours beyond 40 in a workweek are paid at time and a half.
