A lot of churches ask a familiar question when they start a building project:
What does our church need?
Capstone Church in Fountain Inn, South Carolina asked a better question:
What does our city need, and how can our church support it?
That question shaped the entire project.
Capstone’s new facility is not just a worship center. It is a community center where a church meets on Sundays. During the week, the same room can host school events, sports, community gatherings, and other activities that serve the growing city around them.

A Gym That Needed to Work for Worship
The main room at Capstone is a gym.
That creates an obvious challenge.
Gyms are usually loud, reflective, and difficult to mix in. Hard surfaces, high ceilings, and open volume can make speech less intelligible and music harder to control. But Capstone needed this room to work for Sunday worship without losing its ability to serve the community Monday through Saturday.
So the AVL system had to support both uses.
The room includes a significant amount of acoustic treatment: 114 Prime Acoustic Hercules Broadway panels on the walls and 60 Saturna panels suspended in the air. In this project, those suspended panels were installed vertically rather than horizontally based on the acoustic design approach for the space.
The goal was not to make the room feel like a dead studio. It was to make a live gym more intelligible and usable for worship, teaching, and events.
That distinction matters.
In a multipurpose church space, the goal is not always perfection. The goal is a system that fits the room, supports the ministry, and makes the experience better for the people in it.
Audio Designed as a System
The main PA uses Fulcrum Audio loudspeakers with four ceiling-mounted mains arranged in a right-left, right-left pattern. That layout helps create a more consistent stereo experience throughout the room.
Fulcrum RX6 boxes are used as front fills, especially for the first rows where localization matters. In a reverberant space, front fills can help the people up front feel like the sound is coming from the stage rather than from somewhere above or behind them.
Capstone also wanted plenty of low end, so the system includes four dual 18-inch subwoofers on the floor. That is not the right solution for every church, but in this room it gave the system the impact the church wanted.
For drums, the team uses a Gosselin 2.5 enclosure with a full back curtain. That helps reduce stage volume and keeps the drum sound more controlled in a room that already has plenty of natural energy.
The audio rack includes Shure SLXD wireless, Shure PSM 300 in-ear monitor systems, Allen & Heath infrastructure, Fulcrum amplification, and power sequencing. The Allen & Heath GX4816 stage box gives the church room to grow into a larger console later without replacing a major part of the system.
That is a good example of future-proofing.
Churches do not need to buy everything at once. But when possible, it helps to invest in infrastructure that will not become a dead end when the ministry grows.
A Simple Mode for Community Events
One of the most practical parts of this project is the Allen & Heath AHM-16 setup.
Capstone needed a way for school or community users to walk in, turn on a couple of microphones or Bluetooth audio, and use the room without powering up the full Sunday console.
So Churchfront configured a simple control mode.
In that mode, the main console audio is turned off, and selected microphones plus a Bluetooth adapter feed the room directly through the AHM. The controls are limited so users can turn things up enough for normal events without pushing the system into unsafe volume levels.
That is the kind of feature that makes a building truly usable.
A multipurpose space should not require a trained Sunday production volunteer every time someone wants to use a microphone.
Video and Control Built for Flexibility
The video system uses a Blackmagic Constellation 2 M/E switcher, a Blackmagic streaming encoder, video patching, Mac minis, and Adder IP-based KVMs.
One of the most useful design choices is the video patch bay.
Instead of locking every stage connection into a permanent input or output, the patch bay lets the team route video where it needs to go. A stage connection can serve as an input for a camera or as an output for a display depending on the event.
That flexibility matters in a room like this.
Capstone has PTZ cameras that can be rolled in and out each week. For baptisms, one camera can be moved to the front of the stage and routed differently. Instead of rebuilding the whole system every time, the team can repatch quickly and keep serving the event.
The KVM system also allows different workstations to access different computers. From one location, the team can jump between ProPresenter, lighting, front-of-house audio, virtual soundcheck, and other systems.
That makes troubleshooting and operation easier, especially when the front-of-house position is mobile.
The Front-of-House Booth Has to Move
Because the room is a gym during the week, the front-of-house position cannot be permanent.
The console, desk, cameras, and other gear need to be set up for Sunday and then moved away so the room can serve other uses.
To support that, Churchfront designed a wall plate with video and network connections at the back of the room. PTZ cameras can be plugged in, powered over Ethernet, routed to the switcher, and then removed after service.
This is a great example of designing around the real life of the church.
A system that sounds good but takes hours to set up every week can become a burden. A system that is easy to deploy, easy to tear down, and easy to maintain is more likely to be used well.
Lighting That Balances Budget and Function
The room uses Pro Church Lights fixtures for stage lighting, with Pro Kicks on the back and Pro Wash Max fixtures from the front.
Matt points out that the house lights were not part of Churchfront’s scope, and they came with some tradeoffs. They are more affordable, but they do not dim all the way to zero smoothly.
That is a real-world AVL lesson.
Every project involves tradeoffs. Budget, brightness, dimming quality, room use, aesthetics, and control all have to be weighed together. The goal is not to choose the most expensive option by default. The goal is to make the right decision for the room and the ministry.
The lighting system is controlled through LightKey, Companion, Stream Decks, relays, and wall controllers. For simple use cases, Capstone can recall basic lighting scenes from a wall panel without opening the full lighting software.
Again, the theme is usability.
The room should be powerful enough for Sunday and simple enough for weekday events.
Safety and Code Matter Too
One important detail in the walkthrough is the fire alarm integration.
When the fire alarm is triggered, the sound system needs to mute so the alarm can be heard clearly. At Capstone, the fire alarm system sends a signal that recalls a muted scene in the AHM.
This is not the flashiest part of the system, but it is one of the most important.
Good AVL design is not just about cameras, speakers, and lighting looks. It also includes safety, code requirements, power sequencing, emergency behavior, and making sure the system works reliably when it matters.
Designed for Ministry, Not Just Technology
The most important part of this project is not the gear list.
It is the vision behind the space.
Capstone Church wanted a building that could serve the city. The AVL system had to support worship on Sunday, community use during the week, and flexible events throughout the year.
That required more than installing speakers and cameras.
It required thinking through acoustics, control, patching, mobile workstations, volunteer usability, safety, and future growth as one integrated system.
That is what good church AVL design should do.
It should make the room easier to use, the message easier to hear, the service easier to lead, and the building more useful for ministry.
