Most churches are not trying to run a broadcast production system for 50,000 people every weekend.
But every church can learn something from the way Christ Church of the Valley thinks about technology, ministry, systems, and scale.
In this episode of Worship Tech Tour, I visited Christ Church of the Valley in Peoria, Arizona — CCV’s primary broadcast location. This campus supports weekend services in a 3,500-seat room, online broadcasts, and message delivery to 18 campuses across the Phoenix area.
What stood out to me most was not just the amount of gear in the building. CCV has plenty of impressive technology: Avid consoles, L-Acoustics PA, Panasonic Varicam cameras, Ross routing, Resi distribution, Resolume-driven LED content, and a serious video engineering backbone.
But the real lesson is how all of those systems serve a clear ministry strategy.
Production Has to Serve the Mission
Early in the tour, Ryan explained the heart behind CCV’s production ministry.
The goal is not production for production’s sake. CCV wants people to walk into an excellent, distraction-free environment where they can engage with worship, teaching, and community. Their team sees audio, video, lighting, and broadcast as tools that help remove distractions and connect people to the message.
That is an important distinction.
A lot of churches start with gear questions:
What camera should we buy?
What console should we use?
What PA should we install?
How many lights do we need?
Those questions matter. But they need to come after a clearer question:
What ministry outcome are we trying to support?
At CCV, the outcome is clear. They are serving thousands of people in the room, across campuses, and online. Their systems have to support that reality every single weekend.
Standardization Makes Scale Possible
CCV’s production team supports a large multi-site church, but they do not treat every campus like a completely separate island.
Their approach is centralized where it needs to be centralized and localized where it needs to be local.
The broadcast campus sends the message to other campuses. Those campuses have their own local worship teams and hosts, but they receive the teaching, bumpers, and life stories from the broadcast location. Around 75% of the campuses join on Saturday with a short buffer, while Sunday services use cached playback from a selected Saturday service.
That kind of workflow requires more than a good encoder.
It requires standards.
On the audio side, CCV uses Avid S6L systems across campuses because the software workflow can scale up or down. The broadcast campus has a larger system, while smaller campuses can run smaller surfaces and engines. But the operator experience stays consistent.
That means training is easier. Troubleshooting is easier. Volunteers and contractors can move between environments more naturally.
This is one of the biggest takeaways for churches of any size: standardization is not boring. Standardization is what makes excellence repeatable.
Great Systems Help Volunteers Win
One of the most practical parts of the tour was the conversation around volunteer development.
CCV’s team has high expectations, especially in audio. But they also understand that volunteers need a clear path to success.
That does not happen by throwing someone behind a complicated console and hoping they figure it out. It happens by designing systems that reduce unnecessary barriers.
Their audio team uses objective tools like Smaart, RTA mics, loudness targets, and target curves to help engineers maintain consistency. They are still trusting engineers to make good musical decisions, but they are also giving them reference points.
Their lighting workflow is similar. The lighting designer programs the show so volunteers can operate within a simplified cue structure. Resolume is integrated into the lighting workflow so volunteers do not have to jump between systems or manually manage complex video cues.
That is a leadership lesson.
If a volunteer is struggling, the answer is not always “they need to get better.” Sometimes the system needs to get better.
Broadcast Is a System, Not a Camera Package
CCV’s camera setup is impressive: seven Panasonic Varicam LTs, Fuji lenses, a 40-foot jib, handheld roaming cameras, and a dedicated wide shot for teaching graphics on the LED wall.
But the camera plot is only one part of the broadcast system.
The real complexity shows up behind the scenes: video routing, KVM, engineering stations, graphics computers, LED processors, Resi encoders, local backups, cueing workflows, and broadcast audio.
One of the most interesting details was how CCV manages multi-site timing. Campuses start slightly behind the broadcast campus to create a buffer. That way, if one local element runs short or long, campuses do not accidentally get ahead of the message feed.
They even have a workflow for monitoring that buffer and communicating when campuses need to slow down.
That is the kind of operational detail that separates a gear-heavy system from a reliable broadcast system.
Audio and Video Are Built for the Weekend Reality
CCV’s audio setup includes Avid S6L consoles at front of house and broadcast, AVB networking, L-Acoustics PA, Waves integration, Pro Tools for virtual soundcheck, and dedicated broadcast audio mixing.
But the system is not designed around theoretical maximum capability. It is designed around what CCV actually needs to do every weekend.
Their L-Acoustics system has enough headroom for their events, but it is not overspecified for scenarios they are not trying to support. Their broadcast audio room mixes the product that leaves the venue for web and campus feeds. Their Ableton rig handles tracks, click, and LTC timecode for lighting and video sync.
Every piece connects to the weekend workflow.
That is how churches should think about AVL design.
Not “what is the most impressive system we can install?”
But “what system will help our team execute the mission consistently?”
The Big Lesson for Churches
Most churches do not need the same scale of equipment as Christ Church of the Valley.
But every church needs the same level of clarity.
CCV’s production systems work because the team has aligned ministry philosophy, staffing structure, training, technical standards, and operational workflows. The gear supports the system. The system supports the people. The people support the mission.
That is the real takeaway from this tour.
