In this video, I’m on site at West Conroe Baptist Church in Conroe, Texas, walking through a very common lighting upgrade scenario. Their worship space is a 30-year-old room that was originally built as a gymnasium. It now seats around 600 people and supports a blended worship model: orchestra and choir in one service, modern band in another.

That kind of room creates real lighting challenges.

You need enough front light for faces. You need flexibility for different worship styles. You need control that volunteers can actually use. And you need the electrical and data infrastructure to support everything safely and reliably.

Start With the Lighting Your Church Actually Needs

When most people hear “stage lighting,” they immediately think of the cool fixtures.

Movers. Color washes. Beams. Haze. Big production moments.

But the most essential part of church lighting is much simpler: front light.

Front light is what makes faces visible. It helps the congregation see the pastor, worship leader, choir, orchestra, and anyone else serving on stage. If the room is too dark, uneven, or shadowy, the service can feel less engaging in the room and look worse on camera.

At West Conroe, the existing system already had front lights in several positions. That is where every church should begin the conversation.

Before asking, “What cool fixtures should we buy?” ask:

  • Can people on stage be seen clearly?
  • Is the light even across the stage?
  • Does the system support both speaking and music?
  • Does it work for in-room worship and broadcast?
  • Can volunteers operate it consistently?

A good lighting upgrade is not just about making the stage look impressive. It is about helping the room serve ministry better.

The Part of Lighting Upgrades Most Churches Overlook

The hidden part of a lighting system is often the most important part.

Electrical infrastructure.

This is the part almost nobody thinks about when they start dreaming about new stage lights. But it can make or break the project.

Depending on what your church already has, a lighting upgrade may require additional circuits, relay panels, DMX distribution, network infrastructure, or updated control pathways. In some cases, what begins as a “lighting project” becomes an electrical construction project too.

That is not a bad thing. It just needs to be planned correctly.

West Conroe’s worship center was originally built as a gymnasium. You can still see the rigging points from the basketball hoops. The church may eventually build a new worship center and use the room differently again someday.

Choose Lighting Control Volunteers Can Actually Use

The next major decision is control.

How will your church operate the lighting system every week?

Wall controllers allow someone to recall simple lighting presets without opening the lighting software or touching a console. For example, the church might have presets for rehearsal, teaching, cleaning, choir, modern worship, or room reset.

This is especially useful in a church building where multiple ministries use the same space.
