Inside Generation Church’s AVL System: Immersive Audio, Cinema Cameras, Multi-Site Video, and Volunteer-Friendly Workflows

Most church AVL systems are built one piece at a time.

A new console here. A camera upgrade there. A few moving lights. A better stream encoder. Maybe a new LED wall when the budget allows.

But the best systems are not just a collection of parts. They are designed around how the church actually ministers, gathers, teaches, broadcasts, and supports its team.

That is what stood out during our Worship Tech Tour at Generation Church in Mesa, Arizona.

Generation Church is a multi-campus church with a 1,200-seat broadcast campus, satellite locations, and a production team that has built a highly intentional AVL ecosystem. In this episode, we walked through their immersive L-Acoustics L-ISA audio system, DigiCo workflow, grandMA lighting rig, Canon C400 camera package, DEFY camera systems, Resi multi-site distribution, AI translation tools, and the practical details that make the whole system work every weekend.

What makes this system worth studying is not simply the gear list. It is the philosophy behind it.

Generation is not using technology just to make services feel bigger or more impressive. Their team is using technology to improve clarity, consistency, engagement, and connection across every seat and every campus.

Why They Chose Immersive Audio

One of the biggest highlights of the tour is Generation Church’s L-Acoustics L-ISA immersive audio system.

Instead of a traditional left-right PA, Generation uses multiple arrays across the front of the room. The goal was not just to create a more exciting mix. It was to create a better listening experience across more of the room.

In a traditional stereo system, the true stereo image is usually only experienced by people sitting near the center. Once someone moves far left or right, the mix can collapse toward the nearest array.

With L-ISA, Generation can spread instruments and vocals across multiple arrays so more people experience a clear, natural, spatial mix. Drums can feel centered. Guitars can sit where they appear visually on stage. Background vocals, synths, and choir tracks can be placed wider or deeper to create space without relying only on EQ, compression, or reverb.

One of the team members explained it well: instead of constantly sacrificing tone to make everything fit, they can use placement and depth to create clarity.

That is a helpful lesson for churches considering major audio upgrades. The goal is not just more volume. The goal is intelligibility, consistency, and a mix that serves the congregation.

Mixing Becomes More Than a Console Workflow

Generation’s audio workflow starts with a DigiCo console, but the L-ISA processor adds another major layer to the mix.

Individual channels are sent into the immersive processor as sources. From there, the team can place instruments and vocals across the system. They are not only balancing level and EQ on the console. They are also shaping where each source lives in the room.

That changes the way the team thinks about mixing.

For example, a worship leader might be pushed slightly forward in the L-ISA software for clarity. Background vocals might sit farther back unless the song needs a stronger gang vocal moment. Synths and percussion tracks can sit wide and deep, creating space without cluttering the front of the mix.

This is a more advanced workflow, but Generation has built consistency through shared mix philosophy, repeatable starting points, and feedback from leadership. Their pastor is actively involved in helping the team understand what serves the congregation.

That is another important takeaway: advanced AVL systems still depend on clear leadership, shared standards, and practical communication.

Lighting and Video That Work Together

The lighting system at Generation is also designed around repeatability and volunteer operation.

Their team uses grandMA with separate cue lists for each service element. Volunteers are not busking an entire service from scratch. They are advancing clearly labeled cues, with a few controlled opportunities for creativity, such as blinder moments or band spot overrides.

The lighting rig includes Elation fixtures, ADJ Jolts, color-controllable house lights, and haze. But the most interesting part is how tightly the lighting system integrates with PVP.

Generation uses ProVideoPlayer for video playback and controls it from grandMA over ArtNet. That means lighting transitions and screen content can move together instead of relying on separate operators to hit changes at exactly the same time.

The result is that the LED wall feels less like a separate video surface and more like an extension of the lighting design.

That matters because many churches treat lighting, lyrics, and screen visuals as separate systems. Generation’s setup shows the value of integrating them into one creative environment.

A Camera System Built for Broadcast and Multi-Site

Generation’s video system is built around six cameras, including Canon C400s, a Canon C50, and DEFY camera systems.

The team originally considered RED Komodos, but after testing Canon’s C400, they were impressed by the color, clarity, and volunteer-friendly workflow. That last point is important. A camera may have a great image, but if the workflow is too difficult for the team running it every week, it may not be the right fit.

The C400s give Generation a strong cinema-style image while still fitting their operational needs. They also use Canon’s RC-IP controller for camera shading, allowing the video team to quickly adjust ISO and exposure across cameras during moments like baptisms, sermon transitions, or dramatic lighting changes.

The DEFY systems add dynamic movement. Generation uses a track system for crowd shots, sermon visuals, worship transitions, and multi-site engagement. They also have a cable-style camera that brings energy and perspective to worship and response moments.

One of the most practical insights from the tour was how the team thinks about camera movement for multi-site ministry. During a sermon response or applause moment, showing the room at the broadcast campus helps satellite campuses feel connected to the larger church family.

That is a great example of technology serving unity, not just production value.

Multi-Site Video with Clear Signal Strategy

Generation uses Resi to send video to other campuses.

Their video system uses multiple MEs for different destinations. One feed serves the room. Another supports overflow environments. Another is built for online. They can position lyrics differently depending on the use case, such as putting lyrics at the top of the screen for overflow rooms where people standing might block lower-third lyrics.

They also send multiple audio channels through SDI, including broadcast audio, speaker ISO, and other utility feeds. This allows campuses to use local keys during sermon response moments instead of being locked into the broadcast campus’s full mix.

That level of planning makes a difference. Multi-site systems are not just about getting a video feed from one building to another. They are about creating a service experience that feels connected while still allowing local teams to minister in their own rooms.

AI Translation as an Accessibility Tool

Another standout part of the tour was Generation’s AI Spanish translation workflow.

They use OneAccord to take a Dante feed of spoken content, process it, and make translated audio and text available through a mobile web page. People can scan a QR code, listen in Spanish, or read along.

The team also uses a similar approach for translated YouTube content after the fact.

This is a great example of innovation serving ministry. The technology is not being used because it is trendy. It is being used because it helps more people engage with the message.

The Bigger Lesson: Build Systems, Not Gear Lists

There is a lot of impressive gear in Generation Church’s AVL system.

But the biggest takeaway is not “go buy what Generation bought.”

The bigger takeaway is that every part of the system has a purpose.

The immersive audio system creates a better experience across the room. The lighting workflow helps volunteers operate consistently. The PVP integration makes visuals and lighting feel unified. The camera system supports broadcast, online, and multi-site ministry. The Resi workflow connects campuses. The AI translation system removes language barriers.

That is what churches should be aiming for.

Not more gear for the sake of gear.

A system that helps people hear clearly, see clearly, participate fully, and stay connected to the mission of the church.
