Allen & Heath Avantis and Wave SuperRack System for Churches (Churchfront Accelerator Case Study)

High Pointe Church’s Audio Upgrade: A Deep Dive into the Allen & Heath Avantis Integration

In a recent project at High Pointe Church in Graham, Washington, our team had the opportunity to deploy a state-of-the-art mixing solution centered around the Allen & Heath Avantis console. This comprehensive upgrade showcases how modern audio technology can elevate worship experiences while providing intuitive tools for tech teams. Let’s explore the key components and innovations that made this installation special.

The Heart of the System: Allen & Heath Avantis

The cornerstone of High Pointe Church’s new audio system is the Allen & Heath Avantis console, featuring 64 inputs and 42 buses. What makes this console particularly versatile is its extensive connectivity options, including local I/O and expansion card capabilities for both Dante and Waves SoundGrid networks.

The integration with Waves SuperRack adds another dimension to the mixing capabilities. While the Avantis itself comes packed with powerful DSP processing, the addition of Waves SuperRack allows for enhanced control and creative possibilities. The setup includes essential plugins like Waves RealTune for vocal processing and the C6 multiband compressor, enabling precise control over the mix.

Thoughtful Workflow Design

One of the most impressive aspects of this installation is the carefully planned workflow. The mixing strategy involves using the Avantis for basic channel processing and light group processing, while Waves SuperRack serves as the “cherry on top” for additional processing needs. This approach maximizes the strengths of both systems while maintaining an efficient workflow.

The dual-screen setup features a touchscreen Dell monitor for Waves SuperRack control and a Mac mini running Waveform for virtual soundcheck capabilities. This configuration allows the team to capture rehearsals and fine-tune their mix settings offline, significantly improving their preparation process.

Advanced Monitoring Solutions

Personal Mixing with ME-1

The upgrade from their previous X32 system to the Allen & Heath ecosystem brought significant improvements to their monitoring capabilities. The team implemented ME-1 personal mixers for backline musicians, offering several advantages:

Intuitive group control for drum mixes and other instrument sections
  • Easy configuration sharing between units via USB
  • Enhanced control over individual channel parameters
  • Stereo mixing capabilities for improved spatial awareness

Wireless Monitoring System

For frontline musicians, the church implemented Shure PSM 300 systems with an innovative RF Venue architectural antenna solution. This setup includes:

Four primary units plus a spare for flexible monitoring options
  • Stereo mixes controlled via the Avantis
  • Paintable architectural antennas for discrete installation
  • Carefully planned frequency coordination using Wireless Workbench

Premium Drum Miking Solution

The church’s vertical drum set, manufactured by Red in partnership with Vertical, received special attention in the microphone selection. The team deployed a comprehensive DPA microphone package including:

Kick drum (inside and outside positions)
  • Overhead mics
  • Snare top and bottom
  • Tom mics
  • Hi-hat microphone

The DPA microphones’ compact size and superior sound quality provide exceptional capture while maintaining a clean, visual aesthetic. The overheads particularly impressed with their ability to capture a natural, balanced sound of the entire kit.

Front of House Infrastructure

The installation features a thoughtfully designed front-of-house setup with:

Dual Uplift standing desks for ergonomic operation
  • A compact rack system housing essential equipment
  • Clean cable management using trunks, trays, and Velcro ties
  • A permanent 12U rack replacing their previous mobile solution
  • Integrated Mac Studio and other computing resources

Results and Future Plans

Jamie Randolph, the worship leader at High Pointe Church, expressed enthusiasm about the new system and the installation process. The church is already looking ahead to future upgrades, including LED walls, lighting improvements, and potentially camera systems.

This installation demonstrates how thoughtful integration of modern audio technology can create a robust and flexible system that serves both technical and creative needs in a worship environment. The combination of the Allen & Heath Avantis, Waves processing, and high-quality monitoring solutions provides High Point Church with a platform that will serve their congregation well into the future.
