Church LED Walls: How to Plan One That Fits Your Room

An LED wall can transform a worship space. Lyrics and scripture become easy to read from every seat, the stage can stay bright without washing out the screen, and the picture holds up on the livestream. But most LED wall regrets come from buying a panel instead of designing a display. The spec sheet looks right, and then the wall meets your sightlines, your stage lighting and your camera.

This guide walks through the decisions that matter most when planning a church LED wall, in the order we make them, using the wall Jake built at South Fellowship Church as a real example.

LED wall or projection?

Start by asking whether you need LED at all. LED is the better choice when a room has daylight or a brightly lit stage, because a projected image washes out and an LED wall does not. It also lets your lighting team light faces properly without fighting the screen.

Projection is still a good answer for many rooms: dark sanctuaries, side screens, or churches where the budget is better spent elsewhere. Modern laser projectors are bright and reliable. A good designer will tell you honestly where projection reads just as well from the seats, and what it saves.

Pixel pitch: chosen from the seats

Pixel pitch is the spacing between the pixels, measured in millimeters. It sets how sharp the wall looks up close, and it drives most of the price. A smaller pitch means more pixels, a sharper image at short distances and a higher cost.

The right pitch comes from your viewing distances, not a price list. If your front row sits well back from the stage, you may not need a very fine pitch, and the savings can go toward a larger wall or better processing. If people sit close, a finer pitch keeps text crisp. Most of the sanctuary walls we design use a 2.6 millimeter pitch, with finer pitches where people sit close. The South Fellowship wall uses 2.9 millimeters.

Size and canvas: shaped for your content

Before choosing a size, look at what you put on screen every week: lyrics, scripture, sermon points, video, IMAG. A center wall, side panels, lyric banners and vertical strips can each carry their own content. The canvas should fit the content you actually run, and ProPresenter should be set up to drive it.

The South Fellowship wall is 10 feet high by 20 feet wide, a 2:1 canvas that suits lyrics and wide backgrounds.

Brightness for your room and your camera

LED walls can be extremely bright, and more is not better. A wall set for a daylit room is too bright for a dark one. An overly bright wall makes faces on the platform look dark on camera and can be tiring to watch in person.

Camera-ready video

A wall that looks great in the room can still flicker or show lines on the livestream. The cause is usually the panel’s refresh rate and scan rate interacting with the camera’s shutter. Panels with high refresh rates, and cameras set correctly for them, avoid the problem. It is one of the most common surprises for churches that buy panels without a design.

Processing and control

The LED processor takes the video signal and maps it onto the panels. It controls scaling, color and brightness, and it decides how reliably the wall turns on every Sunday. The South Fellowship wall runs on a NovaStar VX600. For volunteers, the system should start with one button and run from the presentation software they already know.

Structure, power and service access

An LED wall is heavy, draws real power and will need service. Mounting, rigging, circuits and access for repairs should be engineered with the wall, not discovered on install day.

At South Fellowship, the wall stands on a ground support structure with counterweights for stability, and the project added electrical circuits to handle the load. Wall-mounted and flown walls need structural review. Plan for front or rear service access, because individual modules will eventually need to be replaced.

Content that serves worship

A great LED wall is only as good as what is on it. South Fellowship uses motion backgrounds from Sunday Screens, with Resolume for layering and real-time control. Whatever tools you use, keep the focus on worship: backgrounds that support the song, text that is easy to read, and nothing that competes with the people leading.

Common questions

How much does a church LED wall cost?

It depends mostly on size and pixel pitch, plus structure, power and processing. A finer pitch costs significantly more per square foot, which is why pitch should come from your viewing distances. A design phase gives you budget ranges before you commit.

What pixel pitch is best for a church?

The one your seats need. Measure the distance to your front row and back row. Most churches land between 2.5 and 4 millimeters, with finer pitches for close viewing and larger ones for deep rooms.

Is LED better than projection for churches?

LED wins in bright rooms, daylit rooms and on brightly lit stages. Projection is still a strong, lower-cost option for darker rooms and side screens.

Why does our LED wall flicker on camera?

Usually the panel’s refresh rate or scan rate interacting with the camera’s shutter speed. Higher-refresh panels and correct camera settings fix it, and it should be checked before panels are chosen.

Can volunteers run an LED wall?

Yes, if the system is designed for it: one-button start-up, ProPresenter configured for the canvas, and brightness presets set during commissioning.
