The Seven Layers Overview
The OSI Model Stack
The OSI Model breaks network communication into seven distinct layers, each with a specific job. Understanding this structure helps you pinpoint where problems occur.
The seven layers:
- Physical — Cables, connectors, electrical signals
- Data Link — MAC addresses, switches, VLANs
- Network — IP addresses, routing
- Transport — TCP/UDP, ports
- Session — Connection management
- Presentation — Data formatting, encryption
- Application — User-facing software
