Traditional Church Tech TRANSFORMATION | Shiloh Seventh Day Adventist Tech Tour

Welcome to Shiloh Seventh Day Adventist Church in Chicago, Illinois. As part of our Churchfront Accelerator program, I’ve had the privilege of working closely with this historic congregation to enhance their audiovisual capabilities. Today, I want to take you through the innovative updates we’ve implemented, focusing on the sophisticated gear and equipment that have revolutionized their worship services.

Meet Paul Young: Spearheading Media Development

Paul Young, the Media Director for the Lake Region Conference, has been instrumental in driving the media overhaul across multiple states. Managing media for approximately one hundred churches, Paul’s role is pivotal in standardizing and elevating the media presentation to enhance worship experiences effectively.

Preserving History with Modern Technology

Shiloh Church, with its roots deep in the early 20th century and a building dating back to 1969, posed unique challenges. The goal was to modernize the space without stripping away its historical essence. This balance was achieved by carefully selecting technology that complements the architectural integrity, such as discreet acoustic panels and lighting that accentuates the church’s traditional aesthetics.

Acoustic Enhancements for Clarity and Aesthetics

We focused on controlling sound reverberations, which is crucial in a space with a wood floor and traditional design. The installation of wood slatted acoustic panels across strategic locations helps absorb sound effectively. These panels are not only functional, reducing echo and reverb, but also add a modern touch that blends seamlessly with the wooden interior.

Visual and Lighting Upgrades for Immersive Experiences

A significant visual upgrade was the installation of an Altitude LED wall system, which spans 30 feet wide and 10 feet tall. This modern solution was critical in transforming the visual experience for both in-house congregants and online viewers. The church’s lighting was also overhauled with Pro Church Lights fixtures, including kick lights and movers, enhancing the visual depth and creating a more dynamic worship environment.

State-of-the-Art Video and Broadcast Equipment

Understanding the need for high-quality broadcast capabilities, we opted for Sony FR7 PTZ cameras. These cameras offer cinematic quality video, crucial for live streaming and recording. With features like auto-focus and excellent color science, these cameras ensure that online broadcasts are as engaging as attending in person.

Integrating Modern Solutions While Respecting Tradition

Throughout the project, maintaining the church’s historic character was paramount. This included decisions around stage design, where traditional elements like the altar steps were preserved. We also introduced technology solutions that enhance functionality without overwhelming the space’s traditional feel. For example, the lighting controls allow for mood settings that respect the aesthetic while adding modern functionality.
